Stephana Oetinger teaching the Vital 5 foundations for high performers

The Vital 5: Why High Performers Lose Their Energy (and How to Get It Back)

July 19, 20265 min read

It was 9:30 at night.

My laptop was still open.

Coffee had replaced water.

I couldn't remember what I'd eaten.

My shoulders were somewhere near my ears.

I had spent the entire day helping everyone else...

and not once had I checked in with myself.

That's when it hit me.

"We don't burn out because we care too much. We burn out because somewhere along the way, we stopped caring for the one person responsible for carrying the mission."

There is something I know about high performers.

Not because I studied them.

Because I am one.

For more than three decades I've worked alongside leaders, entrepreneurs, executives, caregivers, parents, athletes, performers, and people carrying extraordinary responsibility.

The common thread isn't that they're weak.

It's that they care.

Deeply.

They want to make a meaningful contribution. They want to leave people better than they found them. They want to build businesses, lead families, care for aging parents, serve their communities, and somehow still have enough left at the end of the day for themselves.

Until one day...

They realize there isn't much left.

I've lived those seasons.

The calendar fills.

The responsibilities multiply.

The emergencies become normal.

Days become weeks.

Weeks become months.

Sometimes years.

And somewhere along the way, you quietly lose yourself.

Not because you stopped caring.

Because you stopped tending to the foundations that make caring possible.

It Happens Slowly

Sleep becomes negotiable.

"I'll catch up this weekend."

Except the weekend never comes.

Hydration becomes another cup of coffee because you need something—anything—to make it through the next meeting.

Meals become whatever is fastest.

Processed.

Packaged.

Grabbed between appointments.

Movement becomes walking from your desk to your car.

You spend hours hunched over a keyboard, shoulders tight, breathing shallowly, living from one notification to the next.

And perhaps the one we overlook the most...

You never stop long enough to process the life you're actually living.

The stress.

The grief.

The victories.

The disappointments.

The emotions don't disappear because we ignore them.

They simply get stored.

Then one day we wonder why we're exhausted, disconnected, overwhelmed, or no longer recognize ourselves.

We've Been Told the Wrong Story

Somewhere along the way, we glorified burnout.

"Sleep when you're dead."

No.

Respectfully...

That's one of the worst pieces of leadership advice we've ever accepted.

Sleep is NOT weakness.

Hydration isn't optional.

Food isn't just fuel.

Movement isn't a luxury.

Release isn't indulgent.

They're the operating system your body was designed to run on.

Ignore the operating system long enough, and eventually the entire system slows down or just shuts down altogether.

Why I Always Come Back to the Vital 5

People often ask me after all these years...

"Stephana, with everything you've studied, why do you always start here?"

Because these five foundations solve most of the problems before we ever need to solve the complicated ones.

Not all of them.

Life is wonderfully complex.

Sometimes we need deeper mindset work.

Sometimes we need trauma work.

Sometimes we need corrective exercise, somatic healing, EFT, nervous system regulation, or the Stay S.A.N.E. and Yogilachi™ tools I've spent years developing and teaching.

But I've learned something profound.

When the foundations are neglected, everything feels harder than it needs to.

When the foundations are restored, everything else becomes possible.

I'd estimate that for many people, consistently returning to these five daily practices addresses the majority of what has them feeling stuck, depleted, or disconnected.

Not because they're magical.

Because they're foundational.

Practice, Not Perfection

People sometimes hear "daily habits" and immediately think perfection.

That's never been the goal.

The goal is practice.

Life will pull you off course.

Children get sick.

Parents need you.

Businesses have difficult seasons.

Travel happens.

Deadlines pile up.

None of us gets a perfect schedule.

Including me.

After 36 years of teaching, coaching, leading, and learning...

I still come back to these same five foundations.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Not because I've mastered them.

Because they continue to anchor me.

The Vital 5 isn't another program to complete.

It's a way to come home to yourself.

I Teach What I Live

One thing my clients tell me over and over is that they appreciate knowing I'm walking this path alongside them.

I'm not asking you to do something I'm unwilling to do myself.

I'm my first client.

I've experienced seasons of incredible strength.

I've experienced seasons where life knocked me flat.

I've cared for family.

I've rebuilt after loss.

I've recovered from injury.

I've navigated uncertainty.

And every single time...

I return here.

Sleep.

Hydrate.

Nourish.

Move.

Release.

Not because they're trendy.

Because they work.

If You're Ready to Return to the Foundations...

If you've been feeling like you're constantly pushing but never fully recovering...

If you've lost your energy...

If your body has been trying to get your attention...

If you've forgotten what it feels like to wake up clear, present, and connected...

I'd love to invite you to join me.

On August 10, we'll begin the next live Yogilachi® Vital 5: 21-Day Habit Challenge.

For 21 days, we'll return to the foundations together.

No perfection.

No guilt.

No unrealistic expectations.

Just simple, powerful daily practices that help you reconnect with the body, energy, and resilience leadership requires.

Because the world doesn't need more exhausted high performers.

It needs healthy, grounded leaders who can continue making the impact they were created to make.

I'd be honored to walk those first 21 days with you.

Enrollment is now open, and we'd love to welcome you inside.
